On the Motion of Pendulums was commissioned by the Scala Ensemble, which performs on microtonal instruments that include the 31-tone per octave organ built by Adriaan Fokker currently at the Huygens-Fokker Foundation in Amsterdam. The Ensemble premiered the work there in December 2020. It was inspired by the work of Fokker as well as that of Dutch astronomer Christiaan Huygens, whose work advocating the 31-tone tuning system also inspired the title.
